The guy probably played or tried out in Atlanta.
Still weird tho.
The KHL is not a fashion show like th NHL, pretty sure the equipment market over there is not has important has in north America.

KHL teams are extremely cheap regarding equipment unless you're a high level player like Kovalev. I've heard stories about a player requesting a new pair of 11k skates from the EQM only to have them not show up for months, the player then called reebok to see what the deal was and the reebok rep told him the team had cancelled the order. When the player spoke to the EQM again he said the skates were to expensive and that if he wanted them he would have to sell his old ones then pay the rest out of his pocket for a new pair.

And I bet that Kovalev's pants there are from the Habs centennial uniforms.

KHL teams are notoriously cheap and sneaky not only do they do that with equipment but they will try and get out of paying you your full contract if you aren't playing well or not well liked at a certain time. They will go to any lengths to do this such as planting drugs on you, threatening you or even having you arrested since the KHL team owners control the police very often.
